Prudence Chimutuwah (b. 1989, Harare) is a Zimbabwean artist whose paintings and collages explore the changing roles of women in contemporary society. Raised in Chitungwiza, she was influenced by its sculptural traditions and by prominent women artists such as Colleen Madamombe. She studied painting and sculpture at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Arts and Design from 2009 to 2011, later developing collage into a central element of her practice. Her work has been presented by Montague Contemporary in New York and Gallery Delta in Harare, and she has participated in group exhibitions at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. Chimutuwah draws inspiration from women’s everyday experiences, including their economic ambitions, spiritual lives, family responsibilities and pursuit of independence. Her figures reflect the determination of women entering spaces historically dominated by men, while acknowledging the expectations and constraints they encounter. Shaped by her own experience as a creative woman, her work expresses a belief that supporting women’s potential strengthens society as a whole. Her recurring blue figures reflect her wish to address experiences of womanhood across racial, cultural and religious boundaries.

Combining figurative painting, paper collage and stencilling, Chimutuwah incorporates Zimbabwean banknotes withdrawn from circulation, African textiles and fragments of novels, magazines and newspapers. These materials bring economic history, cultural memory and everyday language into her compositions. Patterns, clothing and symbolic imagery connect the individual lives of her subjects with wider social narratives, giving their ambitions and experiences a layered historical setting.
