Professor Ablade Glover (b. 1934, Accra) is one of the foundational figures of modern Ghanaian and West African art. Across a career spanning more than six decades, he has worked as a painter, educator, mentor, and cultural advocate, helping establish an international audience for contemporary art from Ghana.

Glover is celebrated for his intensely textured oil paintings of crowded marketplaces, urban landscapes, forests, and gatherings of women. Applying brilliant color with a palette knife, he builds figures from concentrated marks of pigment that appear abstract at close range but resolve into vibrant scenes when viewed from a distance. This distinctive technique captures the movement, heat, rhythm, and collective energy of Ghanaian public life.

Educated in Ghana, Britain, and the United States, Glover earned a doctorate from Ohio State University and later served as Head of Art Education and Dean of the College of Art at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He also founded Accra’s influential Artists Alliance Gallery.

Glover received Ghana’s Order of the Volta in 2007. His work is held by UNESCO, the Imperial Palace Collection in Tokyo, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, and the Africa First Collection.
