Salah Elmur (b. 1966, Khartoum) is a Sudanese painter, filmmaker, and author whose richly symbolic compositions preserve the people, rituals, and visual culture of his homeland. Now based in Cairo, Elmur draws upon childhood memories, Sudanese portrait photography, illustrated books, cinema, and the cultural landscape surrounding the Blue Nile.

His distinctive paintings combine simplified, mask-like figures with animals, plants, geometric patterns, and calligraphic forms. Flattened perspectives and dreamlike shifts of scale allow personal memories to merge with collective history, while his training in graphic design gives the compositions their remarkable clarity and decorative rhythm.

Signed and dated 1997, the present work belongs to an important early period in Elmur’s career. Its tightly layered figures, bird imagery, rhythmic symbols, and glowing palette of red, ochre, and orange already reveal the visual vocabulary that would define his mature practice. The composition offers an early example of his ability to transform memories of Sudanese life into an imagined, almost mythological world.

Elmur’s work is held in major collections including the Centre Pompidou, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Sharjah Art Foundation, Zeitz MOCAA, and MACAAL.
