Victor Ekpuk
Victor Ekpuk (b. 1964) is a Nigerian-American artist internationally recognized for transforming drawing into a powerful contemporary language. Based in Washington, D.C., he works across painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, installation, and monumental public art.
Ekpuk takes inspiration from Nsibidi, an ancient system of signs and communication developed in southeastern Nigeria and northwestern Cameroon. Rather than reproducing its symbols, he combines their visual logic with his own invented glyphs, creating densely layered compositions that move between writing, abstraction, and figuration. His work addresses African history, spirituality, identity, migration, and the experiences of the contemporary African diaspora.
A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ekpuk is a Smithsonian Fellow whose career spans more than three decades. His work has been exhibited at the Princeton University Art Museum, Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Museum of Arts and Design, Dakar Biennale, Havana Biennial, and Institut du Monde Arabe. His works are held by institutions including the Smithsonian, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Newark Museum of Art, Hood Museum of Art, and the World Bank.
