Prudence Chimutuwah (b. 1989, Harare) is a Zimbabwean mixed-media artist whose richly textured portraits celebrate the ambition, resilience and growing social power of contemporary African women. She studied painting and sculpture at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Arts and Design from 2009 to 2011.

Chimutuwah combines acrylic paint with African textiles, magazine cuttings, musical notation and decommissioned Zimbabwean banknotes. The currency carries particular historical weight, recalling the country’s period of extreme hyperinflation while connecting her female subjects to questions of labor, financial independence and economic aspiration. Presented in confident poses and vibrant clothing, her figures challenge restrictive representations of women as passive or subordinate.

Her solo exhibition Face Dzebasa was presented at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 2022, while Purple Rhythm was nominated for a Zimbabwe National Arts Merit Award. Her work has also been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Long Island and High Line Nine in New York, and was featured in Artsy’s Foundations fair for emerging art."

A determined woman holds on to life, space, and dignity regardless of her flaws and fears. She holds together the space she owns and is resolute to make it a better place for those she cares for." - Prudence Chimutuwah, 2021.
