Godwin Champs Namuyimba (b. 1989, Masaka, Uganda) is a Ugandan painter whose work explores identity, individuality and the relationships that shape everyday life. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kyambogo University in Kampala in 2017, while crediting much of his artistic development to his own discipline and independent practice. Namuyimba’s work is held in the collection of Mudam, the Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg, which acquired his painting The Harvest in 2021. He was also included in Africa Supernova at Kunsthal KAdE in Amersfoort in 2023 and 2024, an exhibition drawn from the contemporary African art collection of Carla and Pieter Schulting. Working with acrylic paint, collage and other materials, Namuyimba creates layered figurative compositions inspired by people in his immediate surroundings. Family members, friends and neighbours become the protagonists of scenes that capture moments of intimacy, humour and vulnerability. His shifting perspectives invite the eye to move around the painting, suggesting the experience of observing a scene from several positions. Familiar encounters acquire an unexpected complexity as gestures, objects and spatial relationships reveal different aspects of his subjects’ lives. About the paintings

At the heart of this practice is an empathetic approach to representation. Namuyimba challenges stereotypical depictions of Black people while examining how identity develops within a postcolonial African context. His paintings encourage viewers to recognise the individuality of his subjects and the subtle social negotiations that connect them. Artist statement
