This painting is of the artist’s husband David. It was painted as a result of her residency at the British School at Rome, using the form of a reclining classical river god as the template for the pose. The artist has painted her husband sleeping several times, each time with a different art historical reference, and so in a sense this painting is part of an ongoing series of family studies. The warm ochre colours echo the heat and light in the Italian capital.
