Kim Joon
Kim Joon (b. 1966, Seoul) is a leading Korean digital artist celebrated for his seductive, meticulously constructed images of tattooed human bodies. Originally trained as a painter at Hongik University, Kim now uses sophisticated 3D-imaging software to transform skin into a virtual canvas.
His compositions combine fragments of idealized bodies with elaborate tattoos, traditional porcelain patterns, and the logos of global luxury and consumer brands. Through this striking visual language, Kim explores desire, identity, social conformity, and the ways commercial imagery becomes psychologically “inscribed” upon us. In works such as We-BMW, branding appears almost inseparable from the body itself, raising questions about whether identity is personally constructed or shaped by consumer culture.
Kim’s work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Saatchi Gallery, London; the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; Total Museum, Seoul; and the Gwangju Biennale. His work was featured on the cover of Korean Eye: Contemporary Korean Art and, in 2012, on the cover of ARTnews.
