Serge first came across Cyrus Kabiru’s ornamented C-Stunners and photographs at the Vitra Design Museum at Weil Am Rein in Germany in 2015, as part of the collateral events of Art Basel that year. He met Cyrus in person during his second solo exhibition ‘Pandashuka’ at SMAC gallery in Cape Town in 2017 where Serge acquired several works by Kabiru for the newly established Africa First collection, and the two had an instantaneous connection. Serge soon invited Cyrus to the Africa First residency in Israel. Cyrus arrived with his wife and young son (for both a first trip outside of Kenya), where they spent 5 weeks at the beginning of 2019. Later that year, the works produced on the residency were exhibited at the beautiful Gallery for African Studies in Tel-Aviv, along with a publication celebrating his work. Kabiru continues to inspire a generation of younger artists in Kenya and is considered a key artist of the Afrofuturism movement. A permanent full-room installation of photographs of Kabiru’s C-Stunners is on display at the Zeitz Mocca Museum in Cape Town.
