Africa First x LyS have teamed up at AKAA 2022 with a unique exhibition on the intersection of art and fashion. The intersection is manifested in the works exhibited, but also promises an innovative experience for art-fair goers.
The artists presented hail from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, South Africa and the USA. Collectively, they demonstrated how the two worlds are coming together in the 21st century, from the perspective of African visual artists and fashion designers.
True to the fair’s emphasis on movement, our booth blended art, design, music, performance, dance and Prêt-à-Porter, blurring traditional boundaries and reinvigorating the art fair model.
The multidisciplinary dialogue on artistic influences offers a variety of approaches to different imagery, iconography, figuration and
textures. On one hand, these influences are dually reflected in memorable visual compositions, and on the other, studies accessible materials referencing African cultural heritage.
The exhibition provided an opportunity to experience artworks free of traditional boundaries, transforming simple ordinary materials into contemporary art, for the wall and for the body.
