Emmanuel Ablade Glover (b. 1934, Accra) is one of Ghana’s foremost painters and educators, with a career spanning more than six decades. His training took him across Ghana, Britain and the United States, encompassing textile design at London’s Central School of Art and Design, a master’s degree at Kent State University and a PhD from Ohio State University in 1974. Returning to Ghana, he became Head of the Department of Art Education and Dean of the College of Art at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, helping shape generations of Ghanaian artists. Glover’s contribution extends beyond painting. He founded Artists Alliance Gallery in Accra to support Ghanaian artists and bring their work to international audiences. His distinctive paintings capture the energy of Ghanaian marketplaces, crowds and urban landscapes. Applying oil paint with a palette knife, he builds thick layers of vivid colour that appear almost abstract at close range. Viewed from a distance, these textured surfaces resolve into figures, market stalls and bustling streets. Women are central to his market scenes, reflecting their presence in the social and economic life of Ghana. Through repeated marks and shifting colour, Glover transforms the movement of everyday life into compositions that reward both close observation and a broader view.

Glover is represented by October Gallery in London, which first exhibited his work in 1982. His paintings are held in collections including the Imperial Palace Collection in Tokyo, UNESCO in Paris and the Africa First Collection.
